Colombia: what a groundwater point on a map can tell you.
A new SGC inventory makes thousands of records easier to explore. The important distinction is between locating a record and validating a water supply.

An entry point into the evidence
On May 21, 2026, the Colombian Geological Service announced a viewer with information on 14,177 water points. Its first version brings together locations and types of recorded groundwater manifestations and abstractions. The announcement describes a resource for exploring study coverage and identifying information gaps.[1]
Read the technical notes first
The inventory page explains that it compiles records from different technical areas while preserving their original structures. It warns that the compilation has not received an additional thematic quality review and that approximately 20% of the data is undergoing thematic validation. These limitations belong alongside the map.[2]
A point is the start of an investigation
For a local brief, record the point identifier, the original contributing area and the available attributes. Note anything missing instead of assuming that every point has the same measurements. A symbol may help locate a documented feature, but it does not by itself establish permission to use it or drinking-water suitability.[1][2]
Keep the next step local
Use the viewer to organise requests for the underlying records and relevant local information. Distinguish the map’s consultation date from dates contained in individual records. If the information changes during validation, retain the version used in the project file so that another reader can follow the same reasoning.[2]
The key to reading it
A public map improves access to information. The record’s origin, completeness and validation status still determine what can reasonably be concluded.
