An index of biomass
NOAA’s assessment published on 13 November 2024 assigned the western Lake Erie bloom a severity index of 6.6. The index reflects biomass over the peak 30 days, using satellite observations. It is not a concentration in a glass of water, and it should not be presented as a laboratory result from an Ohio utility.[1]
A season changes across space and time
The assessment describes a bloom that developed early and later declined, with its distribution influenced by winds. A seasonal retrospective summarizes what happened across those months. NOAA’s forecast guidance explains a different task: tracking location and likely movement over shorter periods. The historical index and an operational forecast therefore answer different questions.[1][2]

For a property supplied from the lake, identify its utility and consult the relevant notices and treatment records. A satellite bloom map cannot establish what a particular treatment plant delivered or what a building’s tap contains. Preserve the source, date and measurement type when discussing the subject with a supplier or potential equipment partner.[1][2]
