AQUELIA JOURNAL / MIAMI · SOUTH FLORIDA

Miami water protection starts before the treatment plant.

The land around a drinking-water well is part of the water story. Miami-Dade’s wellfield programme explains why source protection also concerns businesses and property owners.

A source beneath the surface

Miami-Dade describes the Biscayne Aquifer as porous limestone with groundwater close to the land surface. Its wellfield programme addresses the possibility that substances released on land or into surface water can move towards supply wells. Protecting the source therefore involves more than decisions made inside a treatment plant.[1]

02

Why boundaries need scientific work

The County records a modelling report issued on 12 May 2025 for the Northwest and West wellfields. The work examined capture zones and groundwater travel times as part of a review of protection-area boundaries. A model supports planning; its publication does not, by itself, prove that every proposed boundary became legally effective.[1]

03

What a business can check

The official map is a useful starting point when reviewing a location. Identify the property and consult the County about applicable requirements before relying on a general map. For a water-related project, record the supply source, site context and available technical documentation. This creates a clearer discussion than treating all Miami addresses as equivalent.[1][2]

The key to reading it

Source protection is a local planning issue as well as a water issue. Use the official map to ask precise questions about a specific property.
