Groundwater: a global resource, a local set of questions.
The UN’s 2022 water report puts groundwater in the spotlight. Its global figures are a starting point for learning, not an answer about a particular well.

Keep the denominator in view
UNESCO’s March 21, 2022 release states that groundwater accounts for 99% of Earth’s liquid freshwater. The word liquid matters: the statement is not about all water on the planet, and it is not the share of water that is immediately available to drink. It is a global resource figure.[1]
The report is also about management
The publication examines groundwater through agriculture, human settlements, industry, ecosystems and climate. Its materials emphasise the risks of excessive use and inadequate protection, alongside the importance of monitoring and knowledge. Abundance at a global scale does not describe the conditions of an individual aquifer.[2][1]
Turn the overview into local questions
For a project discussion, ask which aquifer and abstraction point are involved, which records are available and what period they cover. Keep information about the resource distinct from an analysis of the collected water. If a claim has only a global source, leave it at global scale instead of relabelling it for a country.[1]
Use the reference honestly
The 2022 report is the dated reference discussed here. It can help structure the questions a reader brings to local authorities and technical specialists. It does not replace a current local assessment, demonstrate the suitability of a well or establish the performance of a treatment system.[1][2]
The key to reading it
Global water statistics explain scale. Local decisions need evidence tied to a location, an actual supply and a clearly identified period.
